In moments of crisis and exclusion, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams strive to save lives and alleviate people’s suffering. We provide the care that we can with our colleagues, collaborators, and supporters, but in 2025 we saw growing gaps that are not ours to fill. When people with power renege on their responsibilities and shared humanity, the communities we serve pay a high price.

Where our funding comes from

As part of MSF’s effort to guarantee its independence and strengthen the organisation’s link with society, we strive to maintain a high level of private income. In 2025,98 per cent of MSF’s operating income came from private sources.

More than 7.5 million individual donors and private foundations worldwide made this possible. Public institutional agencies providing funding to MSF included, among others, the governments of Canada and Switzerland; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; Unitaid; and national health institutes, research organisations, regional councils, and municipalities of France, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

Our funding policy

Internationally, government funding represents only around one per cent of the total funds raised. Since 2016, we’ve refused to take funds from the European Union, its Member States and Norway, in opposition to their damaging deterrence policies on migration and their intensifying attempts to push people away from European shores.

Moreover, we don’t accept contributions from companies and industries whose core activities may be in direct conflict with, or limit our ability to provide, medical humanitarian work. 
 
Hence, we don't accept money from:

  • pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies;
  • extraction industries (such as oil, natural gas, gold, or diamonds);
  • tobacco companies; and
  • arms manufacturers.

How your donations are spent

Financial Transparency Data

Every contribution directly powers rapid-response medical aid, surgical interventions, essential vaccination campaigns, and emergency care globally.

As an independent international movement, 79% (€1,975M) of total 2025 expenditures went directly to our core social mission. This encompasses direct humanitarian field relief (€1,580M), critical programme support (€316M), and targeted global health advocacy (€79M).

The remaining 21% (€525M) ensures operational efficiency, strict financial governance (€127M), and sustainable fundraising (€398M) to respond immediately when crises strike. Funding is overwhelmingly provided by private donors.
