Bodies at War, at the crossroads of fate and war in the Middle East

Hassan, Qatada, Joud, Abu Wesam and his children were all injured during the armed conflicts in their home countries: Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Their lives turned upside down in an instant, today still they bear the physical and psychological scars of their wounds.

Bodies at War provides a glimpse into their lives before the life-shattering events and their lives today—journeys from injury to reconstruction. Comprising three parts, each story is an immersion into a country’s history intertwined with lives ripped apart by violence.

Yemen, the scene of an endless war of which Qatada and Abu Wesam and his family are victims; Syria, where Joud sustained shrapnel wounds while out with friends; and, last but not least, Iraq and its never-ending cycles of violence which Hassan fell victim to in a car-bomb attack in Bagdad.

All have undergone years of treatment at MSF’s reconstructive surgery hospital in Amman, Jordan. For almost 15 years, the facility has been providing care to people wounded in wars in the Middle East unable to obtain access to specialist health care in their home countries.

A human experience, we recount the stories of several of our former patients to provide a glimpse into their day-to-day existences, lives they have built over the years on their journeys to reconstruction.
