We are working to provide medical care, mother and child health services, and water and sanitation activities for South Sudanese refugees who have fled to Uganda.
Although the number of new cases per year has been declining, seven per cent of the population (about 1.5 million people) is HIV positive.
We offer point-of-care viral load testing in Arua regional hospital, which facilitates rapid detection and early treatment, leading to an improved outcomes for patients.
In Kasese, we run a clinic providing basic and comprehensive healthcare to adolescents, including sexual and reproductive health services, and HIV and tuberculosis (TB) prevention, screening and treatment.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) runs a clinic tailored to the needs of adolescents in Uganda’s Kasese district[cite: 1]. We also support the health authorities to respond to disease outbreaks and other emergencies[cite: 1].
Our dedicated clinic in Kasese implements a one-stop-shop approach, delivering a broad range of medical services, with a focus on sexual and reproductive healthcare, for patients aged between 10 and 19 years[cite: 1]. We also provide social and mental health support for victims and survivors of sexual violence of all ages, and help patients with the management of chronic conditions[cite: 1]. In 2025, we started to treat sickle cell disease with hydroxyurea, a drug that prevents severe attacks[cite: 1].
In addition, MSF teams are ready to support the Ugandan health authorities in case of emergency[cite: 1]. In response to an Ebola outbreak that was declared in January, we refurbished the 32-bed Ebola treatment centre that we had constructed close to Mulago national referral hospital in Kampala in 2022, and built a new Ebola treatment unit at a health centre in Mbale[cite: 1].
We also offered advice on medical care and patient pathways, and trained Ministry of Health staff on infection prevention and control measures in Kasese, Fort Portal, and Mbale[cite: 1].
Other emergency activities in 2025 included assisting refugees from the war in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo[cite: 1]. In April, we donated drugs and tents to UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, to assist their response to a cholera alert in Kisoro settlement[cite: 1]. In July, we provided drugs, training, and materials for water and sanitation services to a local partner association in Nakivale refugee settlement[cite: 1].
