A silent woman-killer in Malawi
Cervical cancer kills over 2,300 women in Malawi every year, or two thirds of those who become infected with it, despite it being an easily preventable disease. This grim reality is the result of issues with vaccination and screening, as well as limitations in the offer of treatment. Access to the northern region of Mozambique has become more difficult since violence erupted in late 2017. However, humanitarian assistance is crucial for the displaced population already suffering from malaria and cholera outbreaks and little access to HIV and TB care. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been felt in every one of MSF’s approximately 450 projects in more than 70 countries. Since the beginning of the pandemic, MSF has had two main priorities: first, to keep existing essential medical services up and running for the hundreds of thousands of patients who rely on us; and second, to prepare for, and respond to the spread of the virus itself. Faced with challenges on a scale never experienced before, MSF’s teams, like frontline healthcare workers everywhere, have had to quickly adapt to the new realities of a COVID-19 world.
