Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Response Program

Since 2008, MSF has been providing comprehensive medical care to victims of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Eastlands. Currently, MSF is offering this service through the MSF Lavender House clinic and in two Ministry of Health (MoH) public health facilities through an integrated and comprehensive nurse-driven model in Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and Dandora II HC. Services provided at the MSF Lavender House clinic include:

  • A toll-free hotline number
  • Comprehensive medical and psychosocial services
  • Referral to secondary or tertiary MoH/private hospitals for those needing advanced care

MSF lends to the legal process for survivors through collection of forensic samples, filling forms, and providing expert witness in courts. Protection and shelter services are provided through creating links with other actors. A community mobilization team raises awareness on sexual violence and creates links with the community.

Emergencies Response Program

This includes pre-hospital ambulance care and a Trauma Room at MSF’s Lavender House clinic along Juja Road. Activities include:

  • 24/7 medical emergency call centre (Toll-free hotline)
  • Medicalized ambulances available 24/7 for referrals in Mathare, Huruma, City carton, Kiambiu, Majengo, Kiamaiko and Eastleigh, with possibility of enroute medical resuscitation and stabilization.

Referrals are to secondary and tertiary ministry of health facilities. The medical emergency set-up also provides MSF with a capacity to respond to Mass Casualty Incidents (MCI), violence, road traffic accidents, collapsed buildings, fire outbreaks, or disease outbreaks like cholera among others.

Youth Friendly Centre in Dandora

  • In 2021, MSF started offering youth friendly services in Dandora II Health Center- a public health facility. The center’s activities have been designed together with the Dandora Youth, key stakeholders in the community, and the MoH, and is run with the active participation of the youth. The center provides packages of both medical and psycho-social activities accompanied by recreational facilities targeting the age group between 10 and 24 years old.
  • The heath care services focus on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) including family planning services, HIV prevention, counselling and testing with linkage to care, antenatal care, treatment for sexually transmitted infections, care for sexual and genderbased violence survivors, and mental health - psychosocial counselling and referral.
  • The social component and recreation area activities include sensitization, health education, life skills sessions, indoor recreational activities, outreach activities, referral to shelter and protection, linkage with other actors for social support for adolescents in vulnerable situations and street populations in economic empowerment and education.
