Understanding SGBV: What It Is and why It matters to you

Many young people experience or witness violence in silence often unsure of what it is or whether it “counts.” Talking about Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) is not easy, but it’s an important step toward protecting yourself and others. Knowledge is power and safety.

So what is SGBV?

SGBV (Sexual and Gender-Based Violence) refers to any harmful act done to someone based on their gender or sexuality. This includes:

  • Sexual abuse, such as rape or being forced into sexual acts
  • Physical violence, like hitting or slapping a partner
  • Emotional abuse, including insults, control, or threats
  • Sexual harassment, whether in person or online
  • Harmful practices, such as early or forced marriage

It happens in schools, homes, relationships, and public spaces. Many youth feel scared or ashamed to speak out, especially because of stigma or pressure to stay silent. But SGBV is never your fault no matter your gender, background, or what you were wearing.

You deserve respect, safety, and support. If you’ve experienced violence or if you’re worried about someone you know you are not alone!
