Over the past weeks, Ethiopia’s Gambella region has been experiencing a dual emergency. More people are becoming infected by an expanding cholera outbreak in Wanthoa Woreda, coupled with the huge influx of refugees arriving because of intense fighting in South Sudan’s Upper Nile and Jonglei states. In the weeks leading up to the displacement, MSF had treated over 1,200 cholera patients and provided more than 3,000 outpatient consultations on the Ethiopian side of Burbeiye. Article - 22 May 2025

Cholera
Violence and cholera ravage northeastern South Sudan, impacting western Ethiopia with outbreak and refugee influx
South Sudan has been grappling with cholera outbreaks across various parts of the country since last year. The latest wave, which began in Upper Nile State, is now spreading further into neighbouring Jonglei state, the Greater Pibor Administrative Area, and across the border into Ethiopia’s Gambella region, where MSF teams are working to treat patients amid the surge in cases. The MSF Eastern Africa Media Fellowship was initiated in 2024, aiming at journalists in Kenya. More than 400 journalists applied for this opportunity. The first edition included a full-day workshop, after which participants submitted their pitches. Ultimately, three successful journalists received reporting grants to cover humanitarian stories from Kenya and South Sudan.
