MSF is providing healthcare and donations of medical supplies in Gambella region, Ethiopia

Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Gambella’s Regional Health Bureau (RHB), Abol’s Health Centre, Gambella Primary Hospital and Gambella Blood Bank are partnering with communities in Gambella, a region bordering South Sudan, in the southwest of Ethiopia, to strengthen the healthcare system in the region.

On December 12, MSF donated maternity items like clothing, newborn baby essentials, hygiene and sanitary supplies to Abol Health Centre to support mothers who give birth in Abol town. After the donation of these items, a coffee ceremony took place in Abol Health Centre with the participation of the head of Abol Health Center, local authorities, community representatives and MSF.

“With the end of the year approaching, we wanted to take the opportunity to express our appreciation for the cooperation with the Abol Health Centre over the past years” says Joris van Oss, MSF Project Coordinator in Gambella.

“As newborn babies and their mothers are particularly vulnerable, we donated these maternity items to help Abol Health Center support them”.

Everyone present in the ceremony shared their appreciation for the cooperation and collective efforts put into improving the health of the communities living in the region. MSF also confirmed their commitment to continue the cooperation in the coming year. The support given to the Health Centre by MSF dates back to 2019, with water supply provided on a monthly basis and occasional donations of medical items.

On December 12, MSF also made a donation of life-saving surgical supplies to Gambella Town Primary Hospital. These supplies will be used for surgical activities which will benefit communities of the entire Gambella region.

In 2014, MSF started its activities in Gambella to complement and strengthen the healthcare system by providing primary and secondary healthcare in Kule Health Centre to South Sudanese refugees who live in Kule camp, as well as treating people that come to the Health Centre from outside the camp.

One of the significant challenges facing the healthcare system in Gambella region is the shortages of blood supplies. MSF is currently in discussions with Gambella Blood Bank for collaborating on blood donation campaigns that would benefit all the region.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a medical humanitarian organization working in Ethiopia for over 39 years. MSF provides medical assistance to people affected by conflicts, epidemics, disasters or with limited access to healthcare, in collaboration with Ethiopian authorities at local, regional and national levels. Currently, MSF works in Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Tigray, Somali Region and in South and South West Ethiopia regions. MSF medical teams provide free, quality care for malnutrition, cholera, measles, malaria, kala azar, snakebites, mother and child care and primary and secondary health care. All activities are guided by the humanitarian principles of humanity, independence, neutrality and impartiality.

On 24 June 2021 our colleagues María Hernández Matas, Tedros Gebremariam Gebremichael and Yohannes Halefom Reda were brutally and intentionally killed while clearly identified as humanitarian workers in Tigray. After extensive engagement with Ethiopian authorities, we still do not have any credible answers on what happened to our colleagues that day. MSF will continue to use all possible means and avenues to pursue accountability for their deaths. With that, we also hope that this will contribute to improving the safety of humanitarian workers in Ethiopia.
