MSF statement on violence in Gambella Region

MSF teams at Kule health centre in Ethiopia’s Gambella Region have been responding to an influx of wounded patients following violence in Itang Special Woreda on 18 September.

The health centre received 88 patients affected by the violence. Eight were deceased, while four others died on their arrival to Kule Health center, despite the efforts of medical teams. The remaining patients have been treated for injuries ranging from serious to minor. Thirteen patients have been referred for additional medical care to Gambella hospitals for further treatment.

“Our priority is to provide urgent medical care to everyone who needs it, based solely on medical need and regardless of their identity or background,” said Gul Badshah, MSF Operations Manager for Ethiopia, based in Nairobi. “We call on all those involved to exercise restraint and protect civilians from further violence.”
