Malawi: “This time around, the destruction is more of houses and farm produce, not of people’s lives”
MSF logistician and community health worker Labana Steven is part of MSF’s emergency team working in Malawi’s Makhanga area to support thousands of people left affected by severe flooding with health and sanitation supplies. Makhanga area was one of the worst affected by heavy rainfall which started in Malawi in early March. The same weather system went on to become Cyclone Idai which struck Mozambique and Zimbabwe on 14-16 March, 2019, one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to hit southern Africa. Labana, who has worked for MSF for 20 years in Malawi, was also part of MSF’s response to severe flooding in the same area in 2008 and 2015. His historical understanding and deep engagement with local partners and communities in southern Malawi are vital to MSF’s ongoing response.
